NEW living libraries

Living Library “Alive Language”
VERBUM, Casa das Palabras. Vigo. 22Th - 25th of November 2011.

Half a year after the 1st Living Library in Galicia (“Living Treasures”, February 2010) Xandobela comes back to the same scenario and the same format -4 days, inviting high school students- with a renewed Living Library. This time the topic is language prejudices.
Being a minority culture, Galician language suffers big pressure in nowadays global society. In 1992, about the 50% of Galician youth used to speak mainly Galician language; in 2004 this rate had decreased into a mere 30%. The reasons for this decline are several prejudices such as the identification of the native tongue and poverty, prejudices largely promoted during Franco's dictatorship that prosecuted minority languages for more than 40 years.
The Living Books include musicians, actors, football players, lawyers, archaeologists, ITC freaks, foreigners who adopted the Galician language as their own such as a Catalonian entrepreneur and a Polish girl, and examples of people who decide to change their daily tongue and share their experience.
About 500 students coming from 11 private and public high schools take part in the event, in two rounds per morning. Readers can book online 3 titles among 12 Living Books, being the reading time 25 minutes each.
